Seven teenagers left Donegal town this morning (Friday) to spend two weeks in Kaoma, Zambia.

They’ll be working with young people their own age on an intercultural exchange as well as carrying out important work with young children at a local orphanage.

The students are: Tara and Shauna Gildea, Barnesmore; Aisling Kavanagh, Ballyshannon; Orla Howells, Donegal town; Declan McLaughlin, a world class Irish dancer from Donegal town; Andrew Clinton, Laghey; and Aran Quinn, Frosses, Most of the students are at secondary school: Aisling and Declan are taking part, despite being in the middle of their Leaving Certificate preparations. Tara is in college in Strabane, while Shauna is studing a PLC course.

The adult leaders accompanying the students are Josephine Warnock, Ballyshannon and Julie Voss and Geraldine Begley, both of Donegal town.

The trip has been organised by The Deck Alan Kerins Project Africa, in conjunction with Foroige, Donegal town. The work the students will be carrying out is also part of the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life Programme.

“We’re so proud of these young people,” Geraldine Begley told the Democrat. “They’ve all worked so hard to raise funds for this project throughout the year. They’ve collected pennies, held a jumbo sale, pyjama walk, coffee morning and so much more, all to help people less fortunate than ourselves.

A big thank you to all those who supported their fundraising efforts throughout the year.”
