A convicted garda killer who escaped from custody in the Republic was jailed for four months at Derry Magistrates Court yesterday.

Martin McDermott (26) of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour, three assaults on police, damaging a set of handcuffs and resisting police on March 16. The charges relate to an incident in the Galliagh area of the city.

A cross border manhunt was launched last Thursday week when McDermott failed to return to the open prison in County Cavan where he was serving his sentence for manslaughter.

McDermott made his way to his girlfriend’s home in Galliagh where he was apprehended by police at around 11am the next day.

During the arrest he assaulted three police officers and caused criminal damage to a pair of handcuffs. The court heard that the 26- year-old bodybuilder had been able to twist the metal on a pair of handcuffs being used to restrain him.
