EXCLUSIVE: Gardaí are carrying out an investigation involving Donegal County Council which is believed to centre around members’ expenses claims. Local gardaí inspected files at County House in Lifford in recent weeks. It is understood some files were removed as part of the investigation. The Garda Press Office confirmed to the Donegal Democrat that an investigation is ongoing, but would not confirm the nature of the investigation. It is believed the investigation is focused on the expense claims of one councillor. A garda spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that local gardaí are involved in an investigation in the offices of Donegal County Council. As this is an ongoing investigation we can not discuss this matter further.” It is understood gardaí spent at least two hours in the council offices examining files.
Donegal County Council had not responded to a request for comment at the time of going to press.
