Mystery surrounds the cause of a fire that broke out at a vacant house on the outskirts of Letterkenny Saturday. It was noticed that the building known as Kiltoy House was on fire. Locals noticed a plume of smoke and the emergency services were alerted.
A number of local fire tenders attended the scene and soon brought the blaze under control. The house is not far from the former Unifi plant and is understood to have been used by the company down the years.
A Garda spokesman said on Saturday that they had been alerted too and were waiting for the fire services to complete their work before moving in to examine the scene. He added that as yet there were no indications as to how the fire started.
One local from the area told the Donegal Democrat: “I was on my way home when I saw the smoke. I don’t think anyone has been living in the house for years. It is away up a lane and off the road so it’s hard to understand how it caught fire. It was a grand house in its day. It would be a pity if it was damaged.”
