With the report from the Constituency Commission due to be presented before the Dáil at 10.30 am this morning there is speculation in political circles that Donegal will be reduced to a five - seater constituency with part of the existing electoral area being merged wit a new Sligo Leitrim Constituency.

The Commission was established on July 27 last by the Department Of Environment and is regarded as a totally independent report. The Commission is chaired by Justice John Cooke, the Clerk of the Dail, Kieran Coughlan, Clerk of the Seanad Deirdre Lane and the Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly.

After nearly a year of submissions and deliberations the commission will deliver it’s report this morning. In all previous instances the reports and recommendations have been accepted and passed by the Dail.

It is widely anticipated that Donegal North West and South West will be merged into one constituency with 5 representatives.

It has also been speculated that the new boundary for the county may end near Laghey with towns like Ballintra, Ballyshannon and Bundoran being merged with a new Sligo/Leitrim constituency.
