A centuries old standing stone that has just been discovered near Ardara is in danger of disappearing again forever, the Donegal Democrat can exclusively reveal.
A local woman, Kate Morgan, discovered the 2m high granite stone while out walking in a remote area. It is thought that winter storms shifted sands to reveal the previously hidden stone at Ballyngreavy Strand, Tramore
She contacted Paula Harvey, former Monuments Officer with Donegal County Council who confirmed that the stone is authentic and has not been previously recorded.
The archaeologist/lecturer believes the stone dates from the 6th or 7th century. Ms Harvey warns that the stone, which is located near the top of a massive sand dune, could sink back down into its depths if strong winds or a big storm hits the area.
