A group of youngsters from south-west Donegal are working hard to raise their fares to Oldenburg, Germany, to take part in a Christian gathering called TeenStreet. For some of the group this will be their first trip outside Ireland and for all of them it promises to be a huge adventure.
TeenStreet is an annual occasion for about 3,000 Christian teens aged 13-17 years, of many Eurpoean nationalities. The young people sleep in simple accomodation, attend worship and bible study in the mornings, and many sports and cultural and novelty acitivities are on offer in the afternoons and evenings. The young people will also have opportunities for public service and Christian outreach.
The group travelling from Donegal will be led by Rev John Purdy and Vanessa Purdy, Dunkineely, whose purpose is to provide care, support, supervision, and help during the preparations, and the week in Oldenburg. The teenagers will be divided into groups of five younger people along with an older coach/team leader and assistant coach. Each group will stay together with their coach, at all times. Travelling as coaches/team leaders will be Donna Lambe, Suzanne Baskin, and Andrew Dunleavy, who will be assisted by Karen Deane and Hannah Dunleavy.
The teenagers in this cross-community and multi-denominational group are Victoria Baskin, Kirsty Baskin, Amy Dunleavy, Cassandra Herron, Megan Laverty, Chelcie Bennett, Kirsty Hutchinson, Leanne Hutchinson, Niamh McGeoghan, Lee Anne Richardson, Lee Armstrong, James Dunleavy and Keith Young. These energetic young people have mapped out a busy programme of events and work projects to earn the funds necessary for them to travel to Oldenburg and attend TeenStreet.
Anyone wanting a teen to do some work such as window-cleaning, car washing, internet assistance, cleaning presses, weeding, grass cutting etc may contact Beth Herron - 074 9541346- who will pair Teens with the work. Also, any unwanted articles of old clothing or household linen, shoes, belts, handbags may be disposed of by calling Beth Herron or Marie Hutchinson in the TeenStreet group’s ‘Cash for Clobber’ campaign. Please note that the Jive-Night, originally planned to take place on June 15th, will now be taking place on June 22nd in the Ardara Methodist Hall.
In the next few months this group of young people will be holding some interesting fundraisers, maybe near you.
