There was pessimism about the future of Donegal’s four town council’s last night ahead of today’s cabinet meeting when the government’s plans for town councils will be discussed.

The cabinet is to discuss the future of town councils today with sources indicating that the plans will be signed off by the cabinet with an announcement to follow on Thursday.

The announcement of the future of town councils has been expected for some time. There have been fears among local politicians that the councils in Ballyshannon and Bundoran would be abolished but there were hopes that the local authorities in Letterkenny and Buncrana would survive.

Cllr. Dessie Larkin said all the information coming to him indicated that all town councils as they exist will be abolished.

The mayor of Letterkenny raised the issue with Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore when he visited County House in Lifford yesterday. When asked about the issue of town councils Cllr Larkin said the tánaiste did not give any guarantees. “He said that we (the government) appreciate the work that has been done by the town councils, and in particular large town councils like Letterkenny, but we have to look at joint administrative services and the sharing of services. What that will come down to is that the town council structures will be subsumed in some way into the larger mechanics of the county council.
