Ballyshannon Town Council has honoured local swimmers for winning an astonishing 80 medals in national competitions.
The swimmers, associated with Marlins Swimming Club and Donegal Surf Lifesaving Club, with their coaches, team managers and families, attended a Civic Reception in the Abbey Centre on Tuesday night.
Ballyshannon Mayor, Cllr. Phonsie Travers, praised their “fantastic achievement”. He said the council very rarely holds civic receptions, adding: “It’s wonderful to see that all your time, effort and expense have borne fruit in such a magnificent way that brings such honour to our town.”
Swimmers associated with the Marlins Club took home 17 medals, including 9 gold, from the All-Ireland Community Games held in Athlone on August 18-19.
Donegal Surf Lifesaving Club competed at four levels in the national finals organised by the Irish Water Safety Association and garnered an unprecedented 63 medals.
Cora Rooney, aged 7, said she’d trained “really hard” but “wasn’t expecting to win” her gold medal in the freestyle final.
Emma Rooney (no relation) added: “I was really proud of myself to win 2 golds in the U-12 freestyle and relay. The training was really intensive and the coaching has been brilliant.”
Odhran O’Neill and Caolán Dolan, who were on the U12 Boys Relay team which placed fourth, chimed: “It was class!”
