A package sent from China to Letterkenny was found to contain drugs valued at 140,000 euro during a special garda operation carried out on Tuesday.

The discovery was made as part of an intelligence-led operation involving Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs Unit and the Letterkenny Drugs Unit, where approximately four kilograms of the drug “4- Methylethcathinone”, with an estimated street value of 140,000 euro, were seized.

The seizure was the result of a controlled delivery of the package that originated in China, to an address in Letterkenny.

“4- Methylethcathinone”, otherwise known as “4 MEC”, is a synthetic stimulant that is chemically similar to Mephedrone.

A 28-year-old male was arrested and detained at Letterkenny Garda Station under the provisions of section 2 Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

It is understood the discovery took place in the Glen Tain Estate in the Carnamuggagh area.

Commenting on the find, local anti-dugs campaigner, PJ Blake said: “While it goes without saying that I warmly welcome such good work, the sad thing is that unfortunately the community are harbouring those who are responsible in dealing with drugs of this kind.”
