Rally says ‘No More’ -Marchers protest against taxes and budget cuts in Letterkenny

Speakers at Saturday’s Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay rally in Letterkenny urged the public to oppose the government’s proposed property tax in the same way that thousands of people have opposed and refused to pay the household charge.

“We’re not having it. We’re standing here to say we want fairness and we want equality, and we have to send that message to the government,” Thomas Pringle, independent TD for Donegal South West, told the crowd of up to 500 people who marched from the Station Roundabout to the town’s market square.

“No to property tax”, read many of the placards marchers carried down Letterkenny’s Main Street. “They can’t arrest us all,” read another. Several people marched with the banner, “North Leitrim rejects Hogan’s taxes”.

Deputy Pringle told the rally that the Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay campaign is about “building a society where people contribute according to their means”.

Rather, he said, each year budgets are introduced “that punish the people who are struggling”.

“We say, ‘No more,’” Deputy Pringle said, to applause from the crowd.
