Following a boycott of Donegal Co-Operative Livestock Mart last Friday, which saw only three cattle up for sale, there have been further resignations from the Mart committee.
Mart Chairman William McElhinney issued the following statement late last night:
“As members of the public are aware, a Shareholders meeting on Tuesday 11th December carried a vote of confidence in the Committee. Some members of public did not agree with the democratic vote and attempted to boycott the Mart on Friday last. Since then they have threatened to barricade the Mart on Tuesday (18th).
“In order to protect the best interest of the Mart, I entered into negotiations with some of the disgruntled members on Friday night. They requested that two members of the committee resign and that another vacate his executive position. It was under duress and with a very heavy heart that I had to approach these people to request this of them. Those people were very hard working, loyal members of the committee, and have agreed to the request in the best interest of the society and the Mart.
“The past few weeks have been extremely stressful for the committee.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who have supported us, especially the farmers of South West Donegal during this turbulent time. “The Mart is opened for business, exports today Monday, sheep sale on Tuesday and a cattle sale on Friday. For further details on sales, bookings etc please contact the Mart Manager Eimear McGuiness.”
