European boxing champion, Jason Quigley, has thanked his friends and well-wishers around Donegal for the messages of congratulations he has received since his victory in Belarus at the weekend.
Quigley’s home-coming celebrations will take place with an open bus tour around the Twin Towns this evening, following by a special function in the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar.
And speaking on Highland Radio ahead of tonight’s event, Jason said he’s hoping that a big crowd will turn out for what should be a special night.
The Finn Valley ABC member won gold on Saturday following his victory over his Romanian opponent, Bogdan Juratoni.
He said the gold medal success was the culmination of years of hard work which began when he started training with his dad in their kitchen when Jason was only seven.
“That’s when I started having dreams of becoming a European champion and making my name on the world stage. It’s been all hard work and it’s really paid off,” he said.
Jason also paid tribute to the support he received during the championships. “The support I have got has been absolutely unbelievable,” he said.
“People who I have grown up, my friends - my Facebook and my phone just hasn’t stopped,” he said.
“It’s been absolutely crazy. It was a part of me winning as well, knowing the support that I had back at home in my own town, my own county, my own provice and country. It was absolutely massive.”
Tonight’s homecoming celebrations in the Twin Towns get underway at 7pm.
