Cllr Brendan Byrne has welcomed of €49,100 euro for Fintra Bridge.
The Carrick-based councillor said the funding will enable design, planning and route selection to be completed by Donegal Council this year.
Building on the new bridge should begin in 2014
Cllr Byrne said: “The current bridge is a bottleneck, and dangerous to navigate with single file traffic only.
“The bridge is not fit for purpose considering it’s the only access route to the entire south west peninsula.”
The new bridge, he continued, will be of huge benefit to the southwest in the years ahead both, from an economic and tourism prospective.
Cllr Brendan Byrne, who led the campaign for a new bridge for Fintra, thanked the council engineers for their assistance and praised the various community groups who lobbied for Fintra bridge through the years.
