Asbestos and domestic appliances have been illegally dumped on Tory island, it has emerged. Dismay has been expressed by a council official at renewed dumping at the site on the island.
Dumping has resumed at the site which had previously been cleaned up by the council and it had been hoped that a council subsidy for the removal of waste from the island would solve the problem. But the July meeting of Donegal County Council’s island’s committee heard that dumping of domestic goods and even asbestos has been taking place again. Area manager for water and environment, John Gallagher said he was very disappointed to see that illegal dumping had returned to such a beautiful place.
He said there is a great system in place for the removal of waste and there is no need for anyone to dump illegally. Litter wardens will be visiting the island looking for evidence of those responsible, he said.
