Cllr. Ian McGarvey still expects to become mayor of Donegal today despite the news that Fianna Fáil are to nominate a candidate for the post.

The 82-year-old county councillor is due to become the oldest mayor in the country today following his nomination by the independent grouping on Donegal County Council.

“The process is there and whatever way it pans out it will be all right,” he said last night. The Ramelton-based councillor said he still expects to be mayor today because of the pact between the independent grouping and Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and Labour.

It emerged on Friday that the position of next mayor of the county will be contested after Fianna Fail decided to nominate Cllr. Sean McEniff at today’s Annual General Meeting of the council.
