Nobody wants to be Mayor in Donegal Town

Less than a week after the outgoing Mayor of Donegal town revealed he was not seeking re-election, disenchanted by the lack of support he received from some members of the local community chamber, it has emerged that no one else has put their name forward to become the new mayor.

It’s an honorary position and by 4pm yesterday, when nominations closed, no one had put their name forward for the post.

In a statement the chamber revealed: “In relation to the Donegal Town Mayor election the closing date for nominations was Monday 8th of April 2013 at 4pm.

“Unfortunately no nominations were received by Donegal Town Community Chamber and accordingly the Chamber finds itself in the position of not being required to facilitate the election of an Honorary Mayor.

“The term of office of the current Mayor Tom Conaghan expires on the May 3rd.”

At this stage it looks like the town will be without an honorary mayor after May 3rd.
