Perhaps the most important political figure in Donegal for the best part of a two generations, Bernard McGlinchey, has died this evening at his home at the Blue Banks, outside Letterkenny.

Regarded in political circles nationally and locally as something of a ‘king maker’, Bernard McGlinchey may have been unsuccessful on three occasions when he stood for the Dáil, yet his influence at national level was said to have been hugely significant. He was known to have had the ear of various taoisigh in an extensive political career.

80 years of age at the time of his passing, he was also a hugely successful businessman, the iconic ‘Golden Grill premises’ on Letterkenny’s Port Road, his most notable enterprise within the town of Letterkenny.

He served as a Fianna Fáil Senator for 20 years, 1961 to 1981, served on a myriad of public bodies, among them the old ‘North Western Health Board’, and was both a county and urban councillor.

Letterkenny town park is named after him.

Tonight, Letterkenny, the largest town in the county, his many political allies and indeed his old political foes will mourn the passing of a man who both in business and politics, made a huge and important contribution to the county of Donegal.

May he rest in peace.

(Funeral arrangements as yet have not been released).
