Jim Lawler is the great grandson of war veteran Michael Dougherty born in Donegal in 1844.

He and his family, including wife Beverly and son Kevin, stopped in the Gealtacht town and paid a visit to An t-Sean Bheairic where they learned more about their

relative.

Jim was making his first visit to Falcarragh where his father’s mother’s father was born. Michael Dougherty later went on to become an American civil war hero and awarded the Medal of Honour for Bravery.

He was the youngest of seven children. On February 19, 1930, he died and was buried in St. Mark’s Cemetery in Bristol, Pennsylvania. He was 85 years old.
