A ring of steel was placed around Ballyshannon by armed gardaí this morning in advance of the funeral of veteran Republican Joe O’Neill.
Mr O’Neill’s remains were removed from his home in Bundoran to Ballyshannon this morning for mass and burial. Hundreds of people attended the funeral with garda checkpoints manned by armed members on all major and minor routes into the Erne town.
The area near St Joseph’s Church was effectively sealed off to vehicular traffic with barriers manned by gardaí placed at key entry points such as the west Rock.
Meanwhile a paramilitary colour party escorted the remains (see picture) as it left Bundoran.
Des Dalton, president of Republican Sinn Féin gave an oration at Mr O’Neill’s grave a short time ago.
