Emigration is “ripping Donegal apart” - Ó Domhnaill

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill says that youth emigration is “ripping Donegal apart”.

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill says that youth emigration is “ripping Donegal apart”.

He told the Seanad this week that the jobs crisis is particularly bad among young people in the North West, with 3,550 under 25 year olds on the Live Register in Co. Donegal alone.

“Youth emigration is ripping Donegal communities apart. Young jobseekers are sick of empty promises. They want some real opportunities to begin a career at home in Ireland,” he said.

“The much heralded Youth Guarantee now seems to be under threat,” he continued. “The Government has provided an initial budget of €14m, 5 per cent of the full cost required, according to the National Youth Council of Ireland.”

The amount of annual funding needed, according to the NYCI, is €273m, two thirds of which could be obtained from Europe.

He called on the Government to “commit a further €91m a year to keep its promise to young jobseekers”.
