Two brothers from Gaoth Dobhair are “recovering well” in a Dublin hospital following two separate operations which lasted a total of nine hours.

In 2009, Joe Bonner was devastated when he was told that the kidney he had received in a transplant five years previously had been rejected by his body. However, his brother Donál Ó’Cnaimhsí stepped into the breach and on Tuesday underwent a serious operation to offer his brother the gift of life by donating one of his kidneys to him.

Family and friends travelled to their Beaumont hospital bedside to be near them this week as they both recovered from the operations. The greater Gaoth Dobhair community lent support by attending a special Mass at the Crannóg on Monday night and prayed for the popular members of the well known family from Glassagh. Others lit candles throughout the Parish to pray for well known sons of Anne and the late Brendan Bonner. A family member said: “Both Donál and Joe are recovering well, so far. We are delighted that the surgeries are over. We would like to thank all those who supported us during this time.”
