A couple who said they wanted ‘minimum fuss’ if they ever got married shocked family and friends with a surprise wedding.

Karen Simmons from Letterkenny and Gearoid Dunne from Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, met up in Canada a number of years ago where they both played for the local GAA club in Calgary.

They kept in touch and got together in Athenry four years ago, when they’d both returned home. They had a daughter, Grace, who is now two and then twins, Leah and Conor, last November. The christening was set for January 2, as so many family and friends would be home for Christmas.

After the ceremony and photos, the priest asked everyone to take their seats for an important second ceremony. He joked that the couple had thoughtfully spared the ladies the bother and expense of looking for hats for the day! “You should have seen everyone’s faces,” Karen’s sister Annemarie said afterwards. “It was a lovely, lovely surprise and so completely Karen and Gearoid!”
