Threatened pensioner with knife

An 80-year-old woman awoke to find a burglar threatening her with a knife.

An 80-year-old woman awoke to find a burglar threatening her with a knife.

The horrifying incident took place shortly after 5am last Saturday morning in Glencar, Letterkenny.

One of the victim’s family members, who asked not to be named, said she is still shocked by her ordeal.

“An intruder broke into my mother’s home sometime between 5am and 5.15am. He went down the hall and made his way to her bedroom. She has a personal alarm next to her bed but he must have gotten to it and disabled it.

“My mother woke up to find the man standing there, threatening her with a knife. He pushed her and took some personal jewellery of enormous sentimental value to her.

“He also made off with some cash and electrical goods from the house.”

The woman only saw one man; it is not known whether he had an accomplice.

She was taken by ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital and released after a short time.

The family member told the Donegal Democrat/People’s Press: “She is staying with family at the moment and seems to be bearing up but, of course, it’s very soon and she’s still in shock.

“We’re all in shock, that this could happen to a woman who lived in that house for over 40 years and raised her family there.

“We hope she’ll come back but it’s too early to say.”

The armed burglary is the latest in a series of robberies at the homes of elderly people this year.

A 67-year-old man was beaten and robbed by a gang who broke into his home in Falcarragh last week. In January, the home of Margaret ‘Gretta’ Lilly (96) in Buncrana was burgled. In the same month, Phyllis McGee (78) of Pettigo was thrown to the floor during a robbery. In July sisters Suzy (89) and Iza Arthur (96) were locked in their Raphoe home during a burglary. Earlier this month, a Castlefinn pensioner was robbed by a gang.
