A man has been shot dead in Derry city centre this morning.

A man has been shot dead in Derry city centre this morning.

According to initial reports the incident happened shortly before 11am a flat above business premises at the top of Shipquay Street.

A section of the street has been sealed off as investigations continue.

Ambulance crews have attended the scene and a woman has been taken away from the scene for treatment. It is not known if she has sustained any injuries.

It is understood a man has been arrested at the scene.

A police spokesman said he could not confirm details of the incident at this early stage.

“Officers are dealing with a very serious incident,” he said.

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey saidhe is horrified by the shooting.

“This is an appalling and disgraceful incident. I was in the vicinity this morning and heard the shots that have resulted in the tragic loss of life. There is a deep sense of shock in Derry city centre today.

“Once again there are those in our community who are intent on destroying the unity of purpose that can only benefit everyone, especially our young people.

“My condolences and sympathies are with the family of the victim at this time. I would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact the PSNI,” he said.
