A leading member of the Traffic Corps yesterday warned school bus operators to get their vehicles into proper shape.
Sgt. Ignatius Larkin told the Donegal Democrat, “Both ourselves and the RSA have been focusing on HGVs over the last number of years with great success - our new emphasis will now be on school buses.
“Safety is paramount in these vehicles which could be carrying up to 20 or 30 pupils to schools on a daily basis.
“Some of these vehicles could look great, but after, checking many could be highly dangerous. We inspected four recently and we found quite a number of defects - this is simply not acceptable.”
He added, “We will be carrying out checks and if we deem the vehicle to be unsafe, it will be off the road immediately. If there are minor defects, we will impose a time limit to get it fixed. We are dealing here with children’s lives.”
