Cllr. John Campbell has welcomed progress on planning for a bridge at Fintra.
However, he cautioned “don’t hold your breath on funding” for the project.
Cllr. Campbell said: “It is welcome news that the council has brought the Part 8 planning forward two months ahead of the schedule. This is a vital step to having the project at a shovel ready stage should funds become available in the forthcoming years.
“Unfortunately Minister Varadkar took the decision in March of this year to terminate the Specific Improvement Grants programme for 2014, under which we were hoping to fund this project.
“I don’t think he realises the long term effects the removal of this and other schemes such as the local improvement scheme will have on local and regional road infrastructure in a rural county such as Donegal.
“I will continue to lobby the minister for the reinstatement of these schemes so that we can bring the Fintra bridge project over the line in the near future.”
