Gardaí have confirmed that a man will appear in Buncrana District Court charged in connection with allegedly ramming a jeep into the front of the Department of Social Protection offices in Buncrana over the weekend.

The jeep is reported to have struck a pub in an earlier incident which took place on Friday night last.

Nobody was harmed during either incident but considerable structural damage was caused.

The first incident happened at 10.30pm at Ture, Muff.

It is understood gardaí became aware of the initial incident and pursued the white vehicle towards Buncrana town.

At around 11pm the Toyota 4WD came to a stop when it mounted steps and crashed into the front of the Department of Social Protection offices in Buncrana.

A large amount of damage was caused to the offices which are located next door to the Buncrana Garda Station.

A 40-year-old man was initially arrested for road traffic offences and released but then rearrested under the Criminal Justice Act.

Yesterday evening, gardaí confirmed that a man is due to appear at Buncrana District Court on January 9 in connection with Friday night’s activities.

The area was initially sealed off while the area was being forensically examined. Locals in the area were relieved that no one was harmed during either incident. One local said: “We were shocked when we heard what happened but relieved that no one was harmed during the incidents.”
