Gallagher calls on McGinley to lobby for N56 scheme

Sinn Féin Cllr Marie Therese Gallagher has called on Minister of State, Dinny McGinley, TD, to intervene with the transport minister on the decision not to fund the upgrade of the N56 from Dungloe to Glenties.

Cllr. Gallagher was part of the Donegal delegation that met last week with the National Roads Authority, an annual meeting to discuss funding for the council’s national road priorities.

“We were informed that although the NRA proposed funding this project, the department has decided not to fund the next stage of the Dungloe to Glenties road, the Gweebarra bends, for 2014,” Cllr. Gallagher said. “This is a huge blow to the people in west Donegal.” She said the road has “cut the west of the county from the south,” adding that it had “strangled any investment in the area.”

Cllr Gallagher described the next stage of the project as, “shovel-ready”, saying, “We were quietly confident works would go ahead.” But she said the transport department decided not to include the 6.3 million euro scheme in 2014 spending, and called on Minister McGinley to intervene with Minister Leo Varadkar.

Minister McGinley could not be reached for comment.
