With Donegal already experiencing high winds, the country is bracing itself for a band of stormy weather in the lead-up to and possibly during Christmas, with forecasts suggesting a risk of severe gales.

There will be a lull in the winds tomorrow (Tuesday) with a ridge of high pressure over the country with winds then increasing again on Wednesday with strong to gale force southerly winds by evening However, the storm to watch, which has been named Emily, will swing into the North West of Ireland and Scotland late Wednesday night to early Thursday.

The areas at most risk are the north west of Ireland to western Scotland in the early hours of Thursday. Peak mean speeds may reach 60 to 70mph with gusts of 90 to 100mph.

There will be more high winds sweeping east during Friday evening to Saturday with gales around most coasts and severe gales again for the north west early Saturday.
