Concerns with attacks on the elderly were highlighted by the new Donegal Person of the Year, Liam Ó Cuinneagáin, speaking on Saturday night in the Regency Hotel in Dublin where he was honoured as the 2013 recipient of the award.
Before more than 500 guests, he said there can be “no doubt” that many people, some of them elderly, are living in fear.
“I met a man from my own locality the other day, he told me that since the light went out in our local garda station, he locks the door of his home every evening at quarter to six.
He said: “There can be no doubt that many elderly people, and others on their own, are currently living in fear as the large attendance at a number of recent public meetings on this matter alone has shown. False economies are being implemented at the present time; this matter and other priority issues affecting rural communities require remedy urgently.
“Our elected representatives will need to go far and beyond the call of duty to get effort and services for Donegal and its people.”
As he made his comments about people living in fear near the end of a 15 minute address, Mr Ó Cuinneagáin added: “It is in no way my intention to take advantage of this prestigious occasion or to exploit the honour I have just received as a vehicle for invading the political domain, nevertheless in response to the requests of the many who have approached me in recent days, I have felt behoved to highlight some of these concerns tonight.”
