MEPs Jim Higgins and Pat the Cope Gallagher met with EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn in Strasbourg to discuss possible storm aid funding through the EU Solidarity Fund.
They learned this year’s €500 million budget is to topped up by an additional €300 million roll over from last year.
By seeking to classify four storms as one climactic event, such an application would be “unprecedented”, the Commissioner said. But he seemed to accept it as “fair and reasonable”, Mr Higgins commented after the meeting.
Mr Gallagher said the government should make an application immediately.
“Ultimately, we simply don’t have the luxury of not applying for this badly needed EU money,” he concluded.
