A 34-year-old man from Northern Ireland who assaulted his girlfriend in a Letterkenny hotel at the weekend has been jailed for one month. Gareth Doran of 20 Loanda Cresent, Newry pleaded guilty at Letterkenny District Court of assaulting Claire Quigley at the Station House Hotel in Letterkenny on Sunday.

Letterkenny District Court heard that gardaí received a call reporting the assault at 5.45am on Sunday.

Inspector Goretti Sheridan told the court that Doran assaulted his girlfriend when he became jealous after she was talking to other men in the bar of the hotel. The victim told gardaí that she was punched and kicked numerous times. Doran threw her on the ground and kicked her before she kicked him back. A porter was called to the room and the matter was reported to gardaí. Ms Quigley suffered cuts and bruises.

Solicitor Patrick Gallagher told the court that Doran had been involved in an altercation with his partner and she “came out the worst of it”. He said alcohol was a major factor in the incident.
