Last week this newspaper highlight the case of Baby Michael McLaughlin, known affectionately as “Birdy” to our readers. Young Michael has special needs, suffers from a rare type of cancer and just recently had to have a leg amputated just below the knee.

Michael has suffered more than many of us do in a total lifetime but his spirt and cheeky grin in the Abbey Hotel on Sunday night reinforces the belief that he will indeed conquer his challenges.

Mairéad Ní Mhaoinnigh and Altan flew in especially from Scotland for this evening and lifted everybody’s spirits in what was a bittersweet and emotional evening.

The McLaughlin family who are the epitome of courage in adversity can return home this evening knowing that they have one very large community travelling their journey with them.

Sinead McGowan who was one of the organisers of the successful and most deserving event said, “Everybody has just been so good - the various people who sponsored prizes, the people who travelled from far and wide to be here, the media and our very own Altan - with this type of support “Birdy”will win this battle.”
