Why they won: The winners at the Donegal Sports Star Awards

The various category winners were presented with their awards at a special reception at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny on Friday evening. Here's who won what and why they won it

HOCKEY

The Hockey Award winner for 2025 is Luke Witherow, Banbridge Hockey Club

Luke is currently part of the Irish Hockey senior squad and is unable to be with us due to a training camp in Dublin so I will ask his father Alan to come forward and accept the award.  Capped 45 times for the Ireland Seniors, the Convoy man was in India in February for the second stage of the Pro League that included games against India and Germany.

The final phase of the FIH Pro League was staged in Belgium in the summer and Luke played against Spain, Australia and Belgium. With Banbridge, he won the Club Champions Trophy for the third successive year and in October, played for them in Barcelona in the European Hockey League.

It’s back-to-back Awards for Luke and his third in total having previously been honoured in 2017.
