Why they won: The winners at the Donegal Sports Star Awards

The various category winners were presented with their awards at a special reception at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny on Friday evening. Here's who won what and why they won it

ATHLETICS

The Winner of the 2025 Athletics Award is Mark English, Finn Valley A.C.

Mark had an outstanding 2025 season during which he broke both the Irish indoor and outdoor 800m records multiple times. He smashed the indoor record when he ran 1:45.15 at the Millrose Games in New York and backed that up by breaking the outdoor record a remarkable three times, becoming the first Irishman to run a sub-1:44 time. And he’s at it again this year having already shaved a full half second of his indoor time at a meet in Luxembourg earlier in the month.

Besides winning his 10th Irish outdoor title, the highlight of 2025 came on the International stage at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn where he claimed a bronze medal in the 800m final. He also secured a number of podium finishes on the Diamond League circuit rounding off an amazing season.
