A fundraising drive has been launched to get Millie a safe space bed.
A Castlefin man is fundraising in a bid to get his little daughter a safe space bed.
Gerry Gilroy, who is now living in Wales, is driving to get the bed for three-year-old Millie, who has autism and is non-verbal.
A family fun day has been organised for August 24 in The White Lion, Felinfoel, Llanelli. A Just Giving page has also been launched as Millie’s family aim to raise the £9,000 needed to buy the bed. You can help donate by clicking here.
Gerry says Millie ‘has the most beautiful soul and the happiest outlook on life’ with ‘enough energy to make a Duracell bunny jealous’.
Millie finds falling asleep and staying asleep ‘incredibly difficult’ and is now on her third sleep training guidance from specialists.
“Every direction we turn desperate for some support and help, it just seems to get further away,” Gerry says.
“All charities they have contacted so far are unable to assist as Millie as she is not ‘officially’ diagnosed yet. Sadly, the waiting list for ASD in Carmarthenshire is currently around the five/six-year mark.”
As is common with youngsters who have autism, Millie has little sense of danger and is a sensory seeker.
“She loves to climb anything and everything and enjoys the thrill of falling,” as Gerry says. “Everything as much as possible is removed from the room to keep her safe but this doesn’t stop her climbing on to the windowsill and diving off”.
A safe space bed would aid both Millie and her family: ‘Somewhere where no harm can come to her, which leaves her family get some much needed rest.’
Her family are also hoping to make some adjustments to her bedroom in addition to the safe space bed.
