Leaving Cert results: What’s next - and how to move forward with confidence

Results are available through the Candidate Self Service Portal on Friday

The long wait is nearly over. For thousands of families across Ireland, Friday, August 22, is a big day, when Leaving Certificate results are released.

Whether your household is filled with excitement, nerves, or quiet worry, it’s completely normal. These results feel monumental, but no matter the outcome, there are always next steps, support, and alternative routes available. Let’s take this one step at a time.

Accessing Results
Results are available through the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP). Students will need their Examination Number, CSSP password, and PPS number to log in. If anything isn’t working, don’t panic: just contact the school or the State Examinations Commission as soon as possible. Getting access early helps ease some of the uncertainty and gives you time to process everything calmly.

Understanding the Points System (Without the Stress)
Once the results are in hand, the next step is understanding what they actually mean. The CAO system can feel like a whole new language (between talk of “points”, “minimum entry requirements”, and “bonus maths points”) but it’s not as complicated as it sounds. Put simply, students earn CAO points based on their six best subjects, and bonus points are available for Higher Level Maths (if they score at least a H6). These points are what colleges use to decide who gets offered a place in a course.
To calculate your points, there are two excellent tools available:
The first is on CareersPortal.ie, where you’ll find a user-friendly points calculator that allows you to quickly input your results and see your total score.
The second is the official CAO Points Calculator, which you can find at cao.ie/points_calc. This version allows students to enter up to eight subjects (including LCVP), and it automatically selects the best six for the total. It’s especially helpful for double-checking scores and ensuring no points are missed. Both tools are free to use and can help you see clearly where you stand.

Checking the Latest Points Requirements
From 2pm on Tuesday, August 27, the CAO PointsFinder tool will be updated with the latest course entry points for 2025. This is your opportunity to compare your points against last year’s cut-offs and see if you're on track for your chosen courses.
It’s important to remember that this isn't a guarantee of an offer - it’s more of an indicator. Each year’s offers depend on supply and demand. But it can help give families a sense of what to expect.

What If the Results Weren’t What You Hoped For?
Sometimes the numbers don’t reflect the effort put in, or they just don’t go the way you hoped. That can be tough to process, but it’s not the end of the road.
If you believe something went wrong with how a paper was marked, students can request to view their exam scripts and then decide whether to submit an appeal. The window to do this is short, so it’s best to speak with your school or guidance counsellor right away. And even if you don’t pursue an appeal, it’s worth knowing that alternative options are open and just as valuable as the CAO route.

Exploring Alternative Pathways
One of the most accessible and respected alternatives is the Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) route. These are one- or two-year courses in everything from childcare and business to science and media. They’re practical, focused, and often include work placements. Many students use PLCs as stepping stones into university the following year.
Apprenticeships are another great option, ideal for students who thrive in hands-on environments. They allow young people to earn while they learn, building real-world skills and qualifications without the pressure of points.
And for some, a gap year might feel right. This could mean working, volunteering, travelling, or even just taking time to consider future plans with more clarity. It’s not a sign of failure. It's a conscious, strategic choice that gives breathing room after a demanding exam cycle.

Looking After Emotional Wellbeing
Leaving Cert results often bring a wave of emotions, for both students and parents. Pride, disappointment, relief, confusion, and it’s all normal. As a parent, this is the time to reassure your child that no single exam result defines who they are or what they’re capable of.
Encourage open conversations. Let them know it's okay to feel whatever they’re feeling. Support them in exploring options, and remind them that success can take many forms.

A New Chapter, Not the End
In the coming days, take the pressure down a notch. Get the results. Use both the CareersPortal and CAO Points Calculator to make sense of the numbers. Talk through the options. Connect with guidance counsellors or careers advisers if needed. And remember—there is no “one right path” to success.
This might feel like the end of something big - and in some ways, it is. But it’s also the beginning of a brand new chapter, one that’s filled with opportunities, no matter what the results say. Whether your child is heading off to college, exploring a PLC, applying for an apprenticeship, or taking time out to think, the most important thing they need right now is your calm, steady support and the belief that good things still lie ahead.
