St Columba’s College, Stranorlar included in school building project

'This is a long‑awaited and vitally important development for the Finn Valley area,' Pat the Cope Gallagher said

St Columba’s College, Stranorlar, has been included in the first tranche of school building projects under the National Development Plan rollout for 2026 and 2027.

St Columba’s College has been operating under significant pressure for many years, with growing enrolments and increasing demand for enhanced SEN provision.

The planned extension and refurbishment of a 1,000‑pupil post‑primary school represents a major investment in the future of education in the Finn Valley and will deliver modern, high‑quality facilities for students, teachers, and the wider community.

Pat the Cope Gallagher TD said: “I am hopeful that work can commence in 2026, as indicated, and confirmed that he will continue to press for the timely delivery of this project. He paid tribute to the Board of Management, teachers, and pupils for their patience and perseverance throughout this long process. This is a long‑awaited and vitally important development for the Finn Valley area, and it is encouraging to see the project now approved to progress to construction.£

However, while the announcement is a positive step for Stranorlar, Pat the Cope expressed disappointment that only one school in Donegal has been included in this tranche.

"Many schools across the county urgently need to progress to tender and construction, and this allocation falls short of what Donegal requires,” he said.

He stated that he will continue to press the Department of Education to ensure that additional Donegal schools are prioritised in the next phases of the NDP, and that the county receives the fair and balanced investment it urgently needs. Local Councillor Patrick McGowan welcomed the announcement also.
