Local elections: 'Work starts again now', vows Anthony Molloy after re-election

Anthony Molloy has been elected on the eighth count in the Glenties local electoral area.

The Ardara-based Fianna Fáil Councillor was elected on the eighth count at around 9.30pm on Sunday.

A sizeable portion of the distribution of John Reilly's votes went Molloy's way – and the 1992 All-Ireland winning captain returns to the County House in Lifford with 1,903 votes after 196 of Reilly's ballots went his way.

“I am very honoured to get the chance to represent my constituency,” Molloy told Donegal Live.

“I knocked on 99 per cent of the doors and I had a great team behind me for the last eight weeks. I have a big area from where I'm from out at Glengesh. I am totally delighted.

“The work starts again now. I have a lot of work done in the last five years and there's a lot still to do. My vote is up by 53 per cent and I am delighted with that.”

There are still three seats in the area up for grabs with Brian Carr of Sinn Fein currently on 1,333 votes and Denis McGee of 100% Redress on 1,315.

Joseph Molloy of Fine Gael has been eliminated on the eighth count and his 896 votes will now be distributed.

Independent Jonathan Stewart (1,158), John Sheamais O Fearraigh of Sinn Fein (1,146) and Kellie Rodgers, also of Sinn Fein (1,116) are locked in battle.
