MEP MacManus to deliver the main oration at Annual Easter Commemoration in Drumboe

Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West Constituency, Chris MacManus, will deliver the main oration at the Annual Easter Commemoration in Drumboe on Easter Sunday. 

Speaking in advance, the Sinn Féin MEP said: “I am honoured to deliver the main oration at the Annual Easter Sunday Commemoration in Drumboe, where we remember all those who gave their lives in the struggle for Irish freedom.

“Irish republicanism today stands strong, proud and just as determined to deliver on the ideals of those patriots who came before us. We stand closer than ever to achieving their vision of a true Irish republic.”

The Drumboe Martyrs, Charlie Daly, Sean Larkin, Daniel Enright and Timothy O’Sullivan were executed in Drumboe in 1923.

All four were Anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army Volunteers who lost their lives in the Irish Civil War. Officer Commanding Second Northern Division. They were captured when their safe house was surrounded by Free State Forces.

In January 1923 following a Free State Courts Martial, all four were sentenced to death which was carried out on the cold early morning of March 14, 1923, just six weeks before the ending of Civil War hostilities when the men were taken from their cells at the official Free State Army Headquarters at Drumboe Castle, Stranorlar.

The main commemoration commences at 3pm at Johnson’s Corner in Stranorlar on Sunday 31 March, proceeding to the monument on main street Stranorlar.

Local commemorations will be held throughout Donegal over the Easter weekend, starting on Easter Saturday in Lifford, Bridge Street at 1pm;  Easter Sunday in Clár graveyard, Donegal (9am), Glencolmcille (10.30am), Aughnashinan (11am), Dromoghill, Buncrana, Castlefinn, Drumkeen, Gweedore (all at 12 noon); Easter Monday in Mountcharles (10am), Abbey, Donegal (12 noon),Carrigart (12.30pm),  Ballymagroarty (2pm), Pettigo and Fanad (3pm). 

Family and friends are welcome to lay their own wreaths or floral tributes at each commemoration should they wish to do so.
