Burt hurlers end league campaign with a win over Carndonagh

Ciaran Bradley scored 0-3 for Burt

Carndonagh’s league campaign ended in a seven-point loss to Burt, in what was a scrappy but exciting Inishowen derby in Pairc Uí Dhochartaigh on Friday night.
Both teams struggled to win primary possession around the middle which led to the scrappiness, although the battling from both teams, and will to win, got the sizeable crowd back on board in this encounter.
With the county season finishing last Sunday, both sides entered the game with some of their aces back in the pack.
For Carndonagh, the ever-reliable Luke White contributed to all of Carndonagh’s tally of seven points, while Ciaran Bradley, Liam McKinney, a second-half substitution, and Ciaran Porter registered 1-5 for visitors.
It was Burt who struck first, with Ciaran Bradley on the scoresheet.
Luke White began his game with a free to level the game up.
It was nip and tuck for most of the first half, the breaking ball being key and both sides' defences were resolute in their efforts.
After 19 minutes the scores were level at 0-3 a piece, with Burt ending the half with three unanswered scores, while Luke White took his tally to 0-4 leaving just two points in it at Half Time as Burt led by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.
Carndonagh started the second half the better, registering the first two scores, and that then led to a barren period of scores for the majority of the next ten minutes.
On 44 minutes, the visitors introduced Liam McKinney and Ronan McDermott, which ultimately gave them the upper hand against a young Carn side.
Although they didn’t contribute heavily on the scoreboard, their link up play, and delivery of ball was a step up from the previous stages of the game.
On 50 minutes Ciaran Porter scored the decisive goal leaving the score 1-9 to 0-6 and it was a tough road back for Carndonagh at that stage.
Luke White scored his seventh point, but two Liam McKinney frees finished off the contest for Burt as they take a well- earned victory into their Championship opener against Buncrana on June 20.
Although it’s another defeat for Carndonagh, their sixth in all, and they’ll need to pick themselves up quickly as MacCumhaills come to town in Round One for the Inishowen men.
