Donegal Senior county hurling champions Burt have been hit with an early championship blow with the news that star county forward Liam Óg McKinney has gone to the US.
The Galway University post-graduate has gone to New York on a J1 Visa to New York and it is understood he will be lining out with Westmeath hurlers.
The talented 21-year-old has been a talisman for Burt and Donegal and he was the driving force for his club when they beat Setanta in the county championship final last August.
And he was a key figure for Donegal when they played in this year’s Christy Ring Cup, occasionally sharing free-taking duties withGerryGilmore.
McKinney won a Nickey Rackard Cup medal last year, was on the team of the competition and took the Player Of The Year as well in a fabulous season while still a 20-year-old. It is unclear if he will be back in time for the later stages of the club championship.
But it is understood that the championships in the US are structured to finish before the closing stages of the club hurling championships in this country. However, if Burt reaches the county final, his presence would be absolutely vital.
