Burt win high-scoring affair against Buncrana in SHC thanks to Gartland magic

The Donegal SHC holders got their title defence off to a great start against their Inishowen rivals

Burt win high-scoring affair against Buncrana

James Donaghey of Burt

Burt 5-13
Buncrana 4-9

Burt may have been minus Liam McKinney, Ciaran Curran, Kieran Brady and Ciaran Bradley to name a few, but they still had far too much power and panache for visiting Buncrana at Hibernian Park in their SHC opener.
Goals from Ronan McDermott, Ciaran Porter, and two from Conor Gartland had them 4-6 to 1-6 ahead at half time. Buncrana’s goal came from Aedan Stokes with points coming from Jack O’Loughlin, Dylan Duffy.
Conor Gartland, who hit a total of 2-8, and Ronan McDermott were on target for Burt. Burt stayed well clear in the second half, keeping well ahead for most of it. But Buncrana kept battling to make for a reasonable contest.
A Gavin Deehan shot early in the second half dropped into net over Burt keeper Paul Burns to reduce the deficit to just six points. Burns later made a good save one-on-one to deny Deehan.
Gartland hit five second-half points from placed balls and Ronan McDermott and Ciaran Porter had points from play.
But there was some drama in the last five minutes as a Buncrana penalty was dispatched by Kevin O’Rourke on 55 minutes.
Burt responded as 18-year-old Kyron McColgan, making his first senior championship match slammed a loose ball to the net at the other end.
And Peter Kelly hit a goal for Buncrana with the last puck of the game.
