Jim McGuinness gave an update on the fitness of Caolan McGonagle and admits the Buncrana man is 'very close' to a return.

McGonagle has had a stop/start championship campaign to date, missing out on the Ulster quarter-finals and semi-finals in Clones after picking up a knock against Derry in the preliminary round.

He returned and played a vital part in the Ulster final win over Armagh but went off early in the defeat to Tyrone in MacCumhaill Park, missing the last three games since.

But speaking after Donegal's 2-22 to 0-12 win over Louth in the preliminary quarter-final, McGuinness said he is not far off returning as Donegal prepare to face Monaghan in the quarter-final in Croke Park this weekend.

"Caolan is very close, he picked up an injury against Tyrone, a bone bruise and they're just hard things to shake but he's been back doing a bit.

"Then you'll know with bone bruising, very easily a bit of pain sets in, you have to take a step back off it and that's where he is, so we're trying to build him up and trying to do it safely, so we'll see how he goes this week."
