Setanta take derby win with second-half surge against Sean MacCumhaills

Gerard Gilmore scored 1-8 for Setanta against Sean MacCumhaills

A strong second-half display pushed Setanta to victory in this well-contested derby encounter in Sean MacCumhaill Park.

But the home side put up a spirited fight to make this quite a contest for most of the match.

The home side had a very good first half with veteran marksman Lee Henderson notching eight points from frees and Fintan Griffin added a goal to put them into a 1-4 to 0-6 lead at the break.

Setanta replied through the ever accurate Gerard Gilmore, Josh McGee Cronolly and Jason Patton.

MacCumhaills were able to contain Setanta’s strong attacking sector in this half and were well worth their interval lead.

But all thoughts of an upset evaporated as the men from the Cross re-emerged with renewed vigour on the resumption and the home team were just not able to really counter the Setanta surge.

Gilmore led the charge with a flurry of scores, including a crucial goal in the 45th minute and the powerful Josh McGee Cronolly grabbed another in the 58th minute as Setanta had real momentum.

Ruairi Campbell and Bernard Lafferty were also on the scoresheet.

MacCumhaills kept battling, and Henderson’s late rocket crashed off the Setanta crossbar.

But the margin of victory could have been greater but for a stellar display by MacCumhaill’s keeper Fionn Mac an Ultaigh.
