A view of Gaelic Park in Bundoran
Realt na Mara GAA club in Bundoran have lodged an objection to the result of their round one intermediate championship match against Naomh Pádraig Uisce Chaoin.
Naomh Pádraig won the match at Gaelic Park in Bundoran on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-11 after Cormac McColgan hit an injury time two pointer for the 2024 Donegal and Ulster Junior champions.
However, Realt na Mara have objected to the result, claiming they were wrongly awarded one point for a score that was hit from beyond the 40m arc.
Realt na Mara contend that they should have been awarded two points for that score and that the game should have ended in a draw.
Donegal GAA has confirmed that its Competitions Controls Committee has received correspondence, but declined to comment any further.
Donegallive understands the issue relates to a score in the second half. It was struck from beyond the 40m arc, but a linesman informed match referee Daniel Carlin that it had been touched by a Naomh Pádraig player prior to going over the bar.
Under the FRC’s experimental rules, scores struck from beyond the 40m line that go over the crossbar are worth two points, but that’s reduced to a single point if the defending team gets a touch on it.
Donegal Democrat columnist and Bundoran grandee Brian McEniff referred to the incident in his column this week.
The Donegal CCC is expected to investigate the matter and will require compelling evidence to overturn the result submitted by the referee.
In round two, both clubs achieved positive results.
Realt na Mara won on the road, defeating Gaeil Fhanada by six points in Portsalon. While Naomh Pádraig secured a draw with 2023 Intermediate finalists Malin on home turf at Ture.
