Cian Burke and his Carndonagh team are moving swiftly through the rounds in the Junior championship
Carndonagh 3-22
Moville 0-8
Carndonagh turned in a dominant display to defeat neighbours Moville in the Donegal Junior A Championship at Foden on Sunday afternoon.
A clinical Carn outfit hit a string of two-pointers in the opening half to establish a commanding lead and never looked back.
Moville, playing into the wind in the first half, saw plenty of early possession but Carn were ruthless once they settled.
After Brennan Moore opened the scoring for Moville inside three minutes, Carndonagh began to cut loose. James Monagle landed a fine two-pointer before further scores from Brendan McLaughlin, Olan McLaughlin, Conor O’Donnell, Fergal Doherty and Cian Burke had the hosts flying. By the ten-minute mark Carn were 0-9 to 0-1 in front, with Moville only able to reply through a brace of frees from Malachy McDermott and points from Josh Lafferty, Séimí McLaughlin, Enda Faulkner and Michael Barr.
The turning point of the half came when Carn struck for their first goal - a simple ball over the top finished clinically - and they added a point on the stroke of half time to leave it 1-14 to 0-5 at the break.
Any hopes Moville had of using the strong breeze in the second half were quickly extinguished. Carndonagh rattled off three points and a goal from Cian Burke inside the opening five minutes to kill the game as a contest.
Moville managed just three second-half scores, while Carn’s relentless pace and accuracy stretched the margin further.
Carndonagh’s attack was in sparkling form, with Fergal Doherty leading the way on 1-6, including a two-pointer and a two-point free. Cian Burke chipped in with 2-2, county star Conor O’Donnell hit 0-4, and Brendan McLaughlin also registered four points. Carn, though, had scoring threats all over the field.
Brennan Moore top-scored for Moville with 0-3, including a two-pointer, while Josh Lafferty, Michael Barr, Enda Faulkner, Séimí McLaughlin and Malachy McDermott (free) each chipped in with a point apiece, while Eoghain McLaughlin, fresh off a flight back from the United States, got some playing time into his legs.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 3-22 to 0-8 win for Carndonagh, who look all but certain of securing the semi-final spot reserved for the group winners.
Moville, meanwhile, will take some encouragement from some passages of play in the first half, but were ultimately outclassed by their neighbours’ firepower and efficiency in front of goal.
Moville are away to Dunkineely next week while Carn travel to take on Letterkenny Gaels.
