Our Lady’s Castleblayney proved too strong for last year's surprise semi-finalists South West Donegal in this delayed first round Group A game in the Danske Bank MacRory Cup yesterday afternoon in Loughmacrory.

The boys from the western seaboard got off to a fine start with a well-taken goal from Michael Gallagher after four minutes. But the rest of the half was dominated by Our Lady’s with seven different players accumulating their 0-10 to 1-3 interval advantage.

Castleblaney started the run with a two pointer free from Charlie Mone and the midfielder added a similar score 16 minutes in to make it 0-6 to 1-1 with Shane Sweeney tagging on a point for Southwest.

Scores each from Oliver Kelly, Shane Byrne, James Ennis (free) and Alex McGinnity followed before Donegal goalie Cian McConnell landed a two pointer free in added time.

A goal within five minutes of the restart from Pauric Carville was cancelled by Southwest when a long-range free from McConnell was deflected into the net by Gavin Sweeney.

However Our Lady’s quickly hit back with goals each for Ryan Lynch and Alex McGinnity and led by 3-13 to 2-5 with ten minutes to go and Mone finished off a good day for the Monaghan school with his third two pointer of the game.
