Naomh Conaill boss Martin Regan had few complaints as he admitted they were beaten by the better side in the Ulster Senior Club Championship quarter-final.

The Glenties-based side had high hopes of going far in the provincial tournament as they made their way to Clones, but Scotstown goals in the tenth and 16th minute had them in control and they led by ten points at the break.

And by that time, it was unlikely that they could repeat their heroics from the county championship in coming from well behind as the Monaghan champions kept them at arm's length to win by 2-16 to 0-16.

“In the first half, they punished us, we coughed up too much possession in our attacks and they were ruthless,” Martin Regan said after the game.

“We started alright, we got the first score and we had a goal chance, so we could have went four up, but we dropped a few efforts and after that, it was one-way traffic, they were streets ahead of us.

“The counter attack kick passes came from us giving away possession, and we were exposed at the back, so they hurt us in that regard. It stemmed from our own mistakes.”

The Glenties-based side had high hopes of going far in the provincial tournament as they made their way to Clones, but Sunday’s result means they have won just one of their last four games in Ulster after winning Donegal.

“We say it every year, it’s disappointing no matter what stage you lose at, whether it’s in the county championship, the first round of Ulster, or the Ulster final, unless you win that All-Ireland club, then you’re going to be disappointed at some stage.

“And we are of course, we were coming here today with serious ambitions at having a tilt at this and getting to the semi-final, but it wasn’t to be.

“There are just days when you’re beaten by the better team, and without a doubt, we were today.

“They punished us every time, and they were ruthless up front. Jack McCarron was on fire early doors, Matty Maguire was brilliant, and Max Maguire, they were excellent today.”
